Hanley Smithfield: Football Arena/Academy, University & Museum

This project focuses on the development of a football-related building in the city centre of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, with the aim of regenerating the area and reviving hope and passion among athletes and students who have not had the opportunity to pursue their dream careers (e.g., professional footballer, coach, medical & physio trainer). The primary components of this project are education, entertainment, and healthcare. Given football's status as one of the most popular and entertaining sports, this initiative is expected to attract numerous athletes and students, creating a unique educational niche and boosting the local economy.

The facility will promote physical activity and healthier lifestyles through a new swimming pool, gym, and physio/medical centre. The building's design concept is inspired by an abstract deconstructed football, with the pentagon shape serving as the heart of the structure. The design aims for uniqueness without complexity, aligning with the encouragement of using Passivhaus standards to achieve net-zero energy goals for better environmental sustainability.

Key materials for the construction include glulam timber structures, prefabricated reinforced concrete, and carbon slate walls. The carbon slate wall is particularly noteworthy for its water and fireproof properties, flexible installation, and marble-like appearance, suitable for both interior and exterior finishes. The use of these materials enhances building performance by increasing efficiency, reducing energy loss, and leveraging renewable energy sources.

The building will feature interactive facilities inspired by my case studies on 'The National Football Museum' in Manchester and Dortmund, offering tailored programs for students and visitors. This project aims to create a vibrant hub that not only supports the development of sports professionals but also contributes to the social and economic revitalization of Stoke-on-Trent.
